If you are looking for a beautiful location for family photos in Central Minnesota, Sunny Mary Meadow in St. Joseph, MN is such a fun and colorful spot during flower season. With rows of blooming flowers, open space for little ones to explore, and gorgeous sunset light, it is the perfect setting for relaxed and meaningful family photos.
I have been photographing this family for quite some time, and it has become such a special tradition to meet at Sunny Mary Meadow each year once the flowers are in full bloom. Watching families come back to a place they love, while also seeing how much their kids have grown from one year to the next, is one of my favorite parts of documenting family sessions.

We started this family session at one of the most recognizable spots on the property, the beautiful Sunny Mary Meadow mural. The mural is painted with flowers and bright, cheerful details, and it always adds a really fun and personal touch to the beginning of the session.
Their oldest daughter especially loves this spot, and it was so sweet watching her walk along the mural and stop to touch the painted flowers. Those little in between moments are often the ones that feel the most special later on because they show personality, curiosity, and the real little expressions that parents want to remember.

After spending a little time by the mural, we moved into family photos with all four of them before heading farther into the flower fields. Sunny Mary Meadow is such a great location in Central MN for family photography because it gives a mix of more classic portraits and candid moments, all in one place.
Once we got out into the rows of flowers, the girls loved looking around at everything blooming around them. They were especially drawn to the marigolds, dahlias, and cosmos, which made such a colorful backdrop for the session. The flower fields created such a soft and dreamy setting, while still giving the kids room to move, explore, and enjoy themselves.
The oldest daughter especially loved running through the rows of flowers, and those moments brought so much life and energy to the session. It never has to be about standing perfectly still. Some of the best family photos happen when kids are able to interact with their surroundings and just be themselves.

One especially sweet moment was when the two girls sat together picking marigolds. It was such a simple little interaction, but those are often the moments that end up meaning the most. There was also a beautiful moment with mom and the girls together as they paused to look at and smell some gorgeous pink dahlias. Moments like that add so much tenderness to a session and help tell the story of what this season of life really feels like.

Sunny Mary Meadow is one of those locations that works so well for families because it feels both beautiful and relaxed. The flower fields are stunning when in bloom, but it is also a location that invites movement and connection rather than forcing everything to feel stiff or overly posed.
For families with young kids, that kind of setting makes such a difference. There is room to walk, explore, hold babies, chase toddlers, and let little personalities come through naturally. It is a perfect fit for family sessions that feel warm, joyful, and true to this season of life.

As the evening went on, we were treated to the most beautiful sunset. The light at Sunny Mary Meadow was absolutely glowing by the end of the session, which gave us the prettiest finish to an already sweet night.
Before wrapping up, I also grabbed a few photos of just mom and dad together. I always love making space for that during family sessions whenever possible. Even during a season filled with raising babies and chasing little ones, it is so meaningful to capture a few quiet images of the two of them together too.
Those little moments at the end, when the kids have settled in and the light is at its best, often become some of the most treasured images from the whole session.

Sessions like this are such a good reminder that family photos do not need to feel overly formal to be meaningful. Some of the best images come from simply being together in a beautiful place, letting your kids explore, and documenting the little moments that already make up your life right now.
