This maternity session near St. Joseph, Minnesota was such a sweet one. It took place in the middle of summer in a flower field filled with beautiful blooms, and it was the perfect setting for this family as they waited for their new baby girl to arrive. The evening was full of playful moments, quiet connection, and the kind of natural interaction that makes family maternity sessions feel especially meaningful.
One of my favorite things about maternity sessions with toddlers is that they always bring a little personality and unpredictability to the session in the best way. Rather than expecting everything to go perfectly posed from the start, I always leave room for kids to settle in, explore, and warm up naturally. That was exactly what made this session so special.

The setting for this session was so pretty. The flower field was full of color and blooms, which made everything feel soft, warm, and summery. It was such a beautiful place to capture this season for their family, especially with a new baby girl on the way.
The flowers added so much texture and interest to the session, but what really made it special was how naturally their toddler connected with the space. She loved picking flowers and running them back to her mom, which turned into some of the sweetest moments of the evening.

Their little girl was a little shy at first, which is so normal. I find that with young kids, it often helps to take the pressure off right away and simply let them do their own thing for a little while. Instead of jumping straight into posed photos, I like to meet them where they are and make friends with them through whatever catches their attention.
Sometimes that means looking for flowers, rocks, butterflies, caterpillars, or anything else they find exciting. Once we become buddies while doing something completely unrelated to taking photos, everything else usually starts to fall into place. That was exactly how this session went, and it is one of the reasons it felt so natural and relaxed.

One of the sweetest parts of the session was watching mom and daughter pick flowers together. It was one of those moments where I could just melt into the background and let things unfold naturally. Their little girl loved bringing flowers to her mom, and it created such a genuine and meaningful connection between them.
Those are the kinds of moments I love most during family maternity sessions. They are not forced or overly planned. They just happen naturally when everyone is given the space to slow down and be together. It was such a beautiful way to document this season before baby sister arrives.

After that, we all went exploring together, looking for butterflies and caterpillars in the field. That playful little adventure helped her warm up even more, and from there the rest of the session came so easily. Once she felt comfortable, her personality really started to shine through.
She had the cutest little hat that she loved running around in, and it added so much charm to the session. It was fun, playful, and perfectly fitting for this stage of life. You could tell she was already such a special part of this growing family, and it was so sweet to capture her excitement about becoming a big sister.

Sessions with toddlers do not have to be stiff or overly posed to be beautiful. In fact, some of the most meaningful images come when little ones are allowed to explore, play, and interact naturally. That is often when their real personality comes through, and those are usually the moments families end up loving most.
This session was such a good example of that. By slowing down, following her lead, and building trust through play, we were able to create images that felt genuine and full of life. It was not about perfection. It was about connection, emotion, and documenting this season in a way that felt true to them.

A beautiful setting, a little room to explore, and space for genuine connection can create something so special.
Whether your child is outgoing right away or needs a little time to warm up, I always want sessions to feel relaxed and natural. The goal is to capture your family as you are, while also documenting the anticipation and beauty of this season before your baby arrives.

One of the most special parts of this story is that I also had the chance to photograph their newborn session after baby girl arrived. I captured video clips during both sessions and created a film that tied their maternity and newborn season together, which made this experience feel even more meaningful from beginning to end.
